Bhutan: special access to the kingdom

Monasteries, monks & meditation

Once cut off from the world, today this secretive mountain kingdom welcomes with deep-rooted spirituality, Himalayan world wonders and near-ancient, fortified monasteries.

With our contacts, we can gain special access to people and sacred places typically off limits to the public – think royal family members, high spiritual leaders and VIP dinner setups beside world-famous monasteries after hours.

It’s all made possible with stays in exclusive mountain lodges and our bespoke luxury camps. Throughout, we’ve organised everything from family adventures to thought-leadership retreats that get right to the very heart of this unique destination.

Below, we’ve picked out a few of our favourite destinations. In each, you’ll have your time elevated with a menu of exclusive experiences, from high-action heli-biking and after-dark river rafting to glaciologist-led heli flights, private festivals and out-of-hours blessing ceremonies in iconic dzong monasteries.

Throughout, you can expect your experience tailored to your exact tastes. That’s alongside stays in the finest private lodges – think former homes of Bhutanese nobility – and even nights in our bespoke camps. Designed around you, options include hot-stone massages and private-chef masterclasses over the campfire.

Paro: As the only area in the country large enough for an international airport, Paro is Bhutan’s gateway. Here, dramatic fortress ruins and Tiger’s Nest – one of the world’s most revered temples – serves as the ultimate backdrop to heli-bike rides, VIP festival access and cliff-side dinner setups.

Punakha: Where life revolves around the river, this Himalayan town entices with its serene temples, iconic treks and epic mountain views. At its heart sits the whitewashed walls of the Punakha Dzong – said to be the most striking fortress in the country.

Bumthang: Meaning ‘beautiful field’, Bumthang is one for spirituality seekers, with 29 temples and monasteries to its name. Comprised of four ultra-scenic valleys, this mountainous region is also a treasure trove for Bhutan’s rich painting traditions.

Gangtey: This vast, glacial valley is not just one of Bhutan’s most sacred, but a chance to experience the country’s rural idyll. Think traditional archery matches, winding horse rides and the roosting grounds of those globally endangered black-necked cranes.

Haa: Ideal for wildlife lovers. Among Himalayan-backed valleys and dramatically located dzong monastery fortresses, search for red pandas, snow leopards and even Bengal tigers with our exclusive access.

Thimphu: As Bhutan’s capital and only city, Thimphu holds a wealth of Buddhist sites and national heritage. Here, alongside visits to artists’ studios and private lectures from national authorities, we’ll see you enjoy special access to museums and even its great Buddha statue – with an overnight stay at a high leader’s nearby private residence.
