Socorro is home to a large number and variety of species of shark. Hammerheads, white tips, silver tips, silkies, duskies, Galápagos and tiger sharks abound. In addition, several of the largest species of turtle in the world, including the leatherback and the green turtle, can be found on its shores – while a visit to the famous dive site, ‘The Boiler’, will reveal manta rays dancing through the waters.
With expert fishermen and scientists as your guides, you will dive through the day as you help retrieve underwater receivers, complete shark surveys and manta ray research and spend the evenings shark tagging silkies, Galapagos and silver tip sharks.
With three dives a day this is one of the only places on the planet where you can swim with humpback whales in total isolation.
Based on a 134-foot, five-berth, live-aboard vessel, you and up to nine other guests can enjoy the spacious and comfortable accommodation as you prepare for your shark tagging and research expedition.
The ship, once part of a Japanese fishing fleet, is now the base for a crucial NGO operation, and you will become an integral part of this dedicated team. Throughout the year, and all over the world, the team tag sharks and promote their conservation and it is in these Pacific waters that some of the finest interactions with a range of species can be experienced.
